About Manly

Manly is a bay side suburban region of the Brisbane City, located towards the eastern part of the central business district. It is surrounded by the Moreton Bay to the east, Lota towards the South and Wynnum to the north. The region was initially settled by the Aboriginal Mipirimm people, who had a semi-nomadic lifestyle. Around 1860, the first European occupancy of the region took place, and the suburb was named Manly in 1882, after a beach in Sydney. The area became an admired seaside location by the early 1900s. The properly-sheltered coastal area is a popular spot for boating and fishing activities. This charming seaside precinct boasts a vibrant atmosphere of dining, shopping, entertainment and farmers market.

Manly Boat Harbour

With more than 3000 wet berths and dry standings, Manly Boat Harbour is the largest harbour facility in the whole of Southern Hemisphere. There are a couple of public boating ramps as well, positioned at either end of the harbour. Some of the boating clubs based in Manly include the Darling Point Sailing Squadron, the Moreton Bay Boat Club, the Wynnum Manly Yacht Club and the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. The latter three have extensive boat maintenance yards, dry boat storing facilities and floating marinas. There’s one commercial port in the bay, East coast Marina, offering covertly boat storage and floating berths.

The Brisbane Coast Guard also has its base of Flotilla in the harbour, right near the entrance. It is known to be the largest in the country, with Brisbane’s Lord Mayor as the Patron. Having established in the year 1972, it continues the operation every public holiday and weekend.

George Clayton Park

Suited for people of all ages and abilities, George Clayton Park is a wonderful nautical themed playground, surrounded by palms, shady trees and shady structures. The play activities include an awesome play carousel, swings, stairs, climbing nets and slides. You will also find a small imitation of Brisbane lighthouse for kids to climb. This is an ideal bayside picnic or party location with electric barbecues, picnic shelters with tables and flat grassy spaces.

The marine-themed play equipment will lead you to plenty of sea captain and pirate games; discovering the high seas in the quest of lost treasure. Physically handicapped or disabled people are catered for with supportive seats and play carousel.

Norfolk Point

Gazetted in the year 2000 in remembrance of Matthew Flinders, Norfolk Point is a man-made point in Manly Boat Harbour with a plate commemorating it. He is known to be the first ever explorer to enter the Glass House Bay, which is currently known as the Moreton Bay. He reached Cape Moreton on the 14th of July, having left Sydney on the 8th of July in 1799. For a couple of weeks, he explored the bay and its surroundings. He named Red Cliffe Point, Pumice Stone River and Port Skirmish, which is now known as Woody Point, Pumicestone Channel and South Point respectively. Finding that there was a passage connecting Ocean and Glass House Bay, he named the land to the north as Moreton Island. Other islands that he discovered were Peel, King, Green and St Helena.

The pool has also got to offer squad swimming and learn to swim classes. The venue is completely closed in July, while the waterside is closed during winter months.
